We are so excited to introduce our next amazing volunteer, Abdul Diallo! Abdul comes to us through Futures and Options– a nonprofit organization that empowers New York City’s underserved youth to explore careers through career development and paid, mentored internships. He is an education major and aspiring teacher and we are so lucky to have his skills and enthusiasm in our Manhattan middle school academics program this summer!

What is your name?

Abdul Diallo

Are you an intern or volunteer this summer?

Intern

Which program are you working for this summer?

Academics, specifically, RNY’s Manhattan middle school summer camp!

How did you learn about Row New York?

I learned about Row New York through another program called Future and Options.

What do you hope to learn this summer through your work with Row New York?

I want to learn how to connect with children and run a classroom. This will help me become a better teacher in the future. I am thankful for this hands-on opportunity I am having this summer at Row New York.

Where do you/did you attend college, what is/was your major?

I attend SUNY Potsdam and major in Childhood Education.

Do you/did you row? If so, what was your favorite part of the sport?

No, I do not know how to row. I have participated in many other sports such as basketball, soccer, track, cross country, wrestling, and rugby. My favorite sports are basketball and wrestling. Both sports work out the whole body, just like rowing!

What’s something you learned about RNY through volunteering/interning with us?

At Row New York, I learned the importance of making everyday interesting and different than the previous so that everybody gets involved in the activities. This helps students feel more engaged and excited to complete their weekly projects, and all the while learn effortlessly.

Thanks for making this summer so exciting and educational for our Manhattan rowers, Abdul!  We’re very happy to have you.
