Though summer is winding down, we’re highlighting our last batch of interns who contributed to successful summer programs! This spotlight features Maddie Perlmutter; NYU coxswain and amazing academic intern with RNY. We were so pleased to have her help working with our student-athletes!

What is your name?

Maddie Perlmutter

Were you an intern or volunteer this summer?

I was a summer academic intern.

Which program did you work for this summer?

I worked with the Manhattan middle schoolers!

How did you learn about Row New York?

I learned about Row New York through members of the crew team at NYU!

What did you learn this summer through your work with Row New York?

This summer, I gained experience building lesson plans and structuring an engaging curriculum while also shaping a greater understanding of how nonprofits can support New York students. Although I definitely learned a lot about curriculum-building, I underestimated how much I would learn from the RNY student-athletes! (I even learned a bunch of Spanish words when students thought that I couldn’t understand them.)

Where do you/did you attend college, what is/was your major?

I attend NYU Gallatin with a major of Education Policy and Nonprofit Management.

Do you/did you row?

I rowed in high school and I am currently a coxswain on the NYU crew team.

If so, what was your favorite part of the sport?

My favorite part of the sport is waking up early! Even though I have to set six or more alarms just to wake up and get out of bed, it is so worth it when we can see the sunrise over the river.

What’s something you learned about RNY through volunteering/interning with us?

I was lucky enough to be able to take part in the Harlem River Classic this past May before being an intern, so I was able to experience some of the successes of the development and fundraising side of RNY. Now, as an intern working in the classroom with RNY students, I understand the importance of events like the Harlem River Classic and the importance of supporting Row New York.
