This week’s volunteer spotlight features one of our lovely communications interns, Emma Keates, a rising sophomore (and coxswain!) at Haverford College. She’s been chronicling Row New York’s fun summer programming through social media and we’ve been so happy to have her on board!

What is your name?
Emma Keates.

Are you an intern or volunteer this summer?
Intern.

Which program are you working for this summer?
RNY’s Communications team.

How did you learn about Row New York?
I was looking for general communications jobs and found Row New York’s listing!

What do you hope to learn this summer through your work with Row New York?

I love crew, and it’s exciting to learn that there are so many opportunities to be involved in the rowing community after college. It’s also great to learn how I can combine three of my passions – writing, social media, and of course, rowing – into an awesome job.

Where do you/did you attend college, what is/was your major?
Haverford College; I’m currently undeclared, but planning to major in English

Do you/did you row? If so, what was your favorite part of the sport?
I’m a coxswain! My favorite part of the sport is definitely the team bonding aspect. Joining my school’s team in the first week of freshman year was great; it was amazing to essentially be handed a group of friends right off the bat. I also love that practice provides the chance to take a break from the stress of tests and classes and spend some time outside.

What’s something you learned about RNY through volunteering/interning with us?
I learned just how amazing this community is and also how inspiring it is to see rowers of all ages – from the middle schoolers to the masters – with such passion and drive for the sport.
