Though her role is sometimes overlooked, a coxswain is hugely important to the team’s success both on and off the water. Row New York asked Dannah Seecomar (Manhattan Novice) and Daniela Doyle (Queens Novice) about their experiences coxing.

What do you think the coxswain’s role is on the team? How does the team rely on you?

Dannah Seecoomar: I think the role of the coxswain goes far beyond just steering a boat. The coxswain needs to be a leader within the boat, and be able to maintain composure even during the most stressful situations. Coxswains need to be able to critique technique, and provide feedback, both complimentary and constructive. I think at times the team relies on me when they want reassurance.

Daniela Doyle: She should steer a straight course, motivate and encourage, coach on race days, and be a second or third coach in practice.

What is your best memory of when you were essential to the team’s success? Was it during a race? During practice?

DS: It was during our race talk before Cooper Cup and then on the water during that race. I believe I was able to help the girls relax before the race and then keep them calm and composed once we were on the water.

DD: My best memory is the Row for Autism regatta. We placed twice in second place! I feel that I was essential because I encouraged them to build their strength back up when they looked exhausted.

How have you changed as a person as a result of being a coxswain?

DS: I now have a feeling of self-assurance that I didn’t have before. My new role has allowed me to become more confident and sure of myself. I am also now able to help the other girls in my boat achieve something that they may not have been able to without assistance.

DD: I feel that I am a lot more calm now, and that I can remain calm in and outside of Row New York and handle situations a lot more efficiently as a result.

What is your happiest memory as a coxswain?

DD: Every day! I feel more like a leader everyday I cox because my girls rely on me for a lot.

DS: It probably occurred last weekend after Cooper Cup. Although we did not win that race, it was still a success. It was an amazing learning experience for me, and the girls in my boat seemed happy with my performance. After the race, when Coach Sasha was speaking to my mom, she complimented my coxing and the feeling of pride I felt could not be replicated. As a coxswain, your performance is not something that is usually acknowledged. Hearing that positive feedback was very appreciated.
