Last week we kicked off our Athlete Spotlights series. Over the course of six video segments, viewers embark on a journey through our athlete’s aspirations, realizations, and experiences with Row New York. The series was created and produced by alumnae, Brittany Benninger and Nadja Steiner, at the Peter Jay Sharp Boathouse this past summer.
Today, the young women who made the Athlete Spotlights stories come to life reflect on their three years with Row New York. Nadja and Brittany came to Row New York when the Queens programming had just expanded to Manhattan. Over the years, they witnessed a team grow in unity and closeness as they progressed through their novice and varsity years. They gained role models in their coaches and a network of friends and support – all paved by the sport of rowing.

Brittany
Brittany is now enjoying life at Notre Dame! She is pursuing a degree in economics with possible minors in sustainability and anthropology. After rowing at Notre Dame for her first fall semester, she decided that being on the team did not align with her goals for her time at ND. She has since been taking advantage of all Notre Dame has to offer as a research assistant in the Economics Department, a member of GreeND and Fossil Free ND, and a participant in learning service trips to Appalachia. She is excited to see what interesting classes she can continue to get wrapped up in and where Notre Dame’s service programs can take her!
Nadja
Nadja is now a freshman at Bates College. She is an economics major and is interested in pursuing a German minor. Nadja is on the Bates Division III crew team. She loves continuing to be part of the interdependent, inclusive team sport that rowing is, and accredits her rowing family to being an integral part of her amazing college experience thus far. She is eager to continue to grow as an athlete and to see what other eye-opening experiences rowing will provide.
