We’re into the last few weeks of our Summer Staff Spotlight! Today we highlight Hannah Ryan-Humphrey, a tutor with us since February. She is a delightful person and has been a joy to work with!

Q: How are you helping at Row New York this summer?
A: I’m a lead tutor and also an after school tutor. I’ve been with RNY since February.

Q: Which program are you working with this summer?
A: Middle School, Queens

Q: How did you learn about about Row New York?
A: I learned about Row New York through my housemate, Willa, who used to tutor the Middle School and Novice teams. When Willa explained the organization to me, it piqued my interest. For two consecutive summers in college, I worked as a Resident Assistant in a program designed for high school students taking college courses. I really enjoyed working with that age group, and wanted the chance to do so again with Row New York.

Q: What do you hope to learn this summer through your work with Row New York?
A: I hope to learn more about our students! I also would like to learn more about rowing, and maybe even get out on the water one day.

Q: Where did you attend college? What was your major?
A: I graduated from Skidmore College in 2013 with a Bachelor of Science in Studio Art.

Q: Do you row?
A: I don’t row, but I do have not so fond memories of erg workouts in high school gym class. They were always so exhausting!

Q: What do you like to do for fun?
A: I love bike riding and reading. In upstate New York, I biked mostly in the countryside; in NYC, I’m still trying to find good bike routes. I’ve mostly been using my bike in the city for transportation and exercise. Thus far, my favorite bike ride has been from my apartment in Brooklyn to Jacob Riis Beach in the Rockaways. In terms of reading, I wouldn’t say I have a favorite genre. I generally stay away from mysteries (I get scared easily), and I definitely read more fiction than non-fiction. My favorite book is “Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe” by Fannie Flagg – I like how sassy the characters are!

I also love making things for fun – I knit, sew, and paint. I was a painting concentration in college, and since I’ve graduated, I haven’t been able to paint as much. Sewing and knitting have taken the place of painting to some degree – they allow me to continue to do something creative and hands-on. However, I do hope to make painting a priority again. Q: What’s something you learned about Row New York that you didn’t know before interning with us?
A: I’ve learned that Row New York has an incredible staff who make working at RNY a truly fun experience.

Thank you for all your hard work and sharing a little about yourself! Have fun with the rest of the summer!
