On Saturday morning, I had the pleasure of spending a few hours with coaches Previn and Mike as well as the varsity girls. If the sweat and heavy breathing were any indication, I arrived just a few minutes after their erg warm up and I prepared myself mentally to take some pictures of an erg practice, which I must admit isn’t all that exciting photographically speaking. It turns out Previn had something a little different in mind.

The Battle Plan in its concept stage.

After a pretty heated erg battle, I found out about a contest that just finished up this week, which was based entirely around the chart found below.

The concept is simple. Along the top there is a list of various tasks. If you complete a task, you get a star. Collect all the stars and you get a prize. Sounds like so many different video games right? Most of the tasks are rowing/erging related, but there are a handful that are not. That handful ranges from completely normal to absolutely hilarious. On the normal end we have “throw a football with a perfect spiral”, and on the absolutely hilarious end we have “Operation”. What exactly is “Operation”? Pull a power ten on the erg then immediately, and successfully, on the FIRST try, extract a specific piece from an Operation game board. Oh, and the prize? A custom embroidered, personalized duffle bag from Sew Sporty. Its an awesome prize, trust me.

I absolutely loved fun, yet challenging practices such as these. They can, and for me often did, stick in one’s head as a defining moment of a particular season. Here’s a few more pictures for your enjoyment.
