On Saturday, April 16th, 18 of Row New York’s middle school rowers converged with hundreds of other young people from across the city for Global Youth Service Day. Accompanied by Director of Middle School Programs Jennie Trayes, the girls traveled from their neighborhoods in Queens to Long Island University in Fort Greene, Brooklyn to spend a day working on service projects for New York City and beyond. The girls learned about an organization called Peace Players that uses the sport of basketball as a tool of conflict resolution and leadership development for young people from divided communities around the world. They had a video conference through Skype with a Peace Player in Northern Ireland, and later created posters and wrote letters to young people in the Northern Ireland Peace Players program to share an international vision of leadership, community building, and peaceful coexistence for all.

Special thanks to Up2Us and NYC Service for hosting this inspiring event.
