In an effort to introduce new students to the unique sport of rowing and get them moving in a new way Row New York has been working with M.S. 217 in Jamaica, Queens to teach students to row during their gym class. During the week of February 10th, all seventh and eighth-graders have been given the opportunity to attend Row New York’s erging clinics in place of normal gym activities.

Over four years of running the program, we have worked with more than 1,000 students from public middle schools throughout New York City. This week was especially exciting for us because we got to work with several gym classes containing over 120 students–making this the largest year of the program ever!

This year each class was separated into three sections based on the three fundamental workout techniques used in winter rowing: flexibility, strength, and erg ability. While spending time at each station students participated in exercises such as relay races, medicine ball push ups, pair stretching, and erging instruction.

Although they enjoyed all of the stations, most students said they liked the erging station the best.  “It was really cool that we got to try this because I’ve never even seen this machine before,” said one student. “I just learned about something I never knew–I was having fun and exercising at the same time!”

Row New York would like to thank M.S. 217 for partnering with us and we look forward to bringing the sport of rowing to more New York City teens.
