Row New York Collects Medals at Strong Island Sprints

Row New York’s competitors made their presence unmistakable at this weekend’s Strong Island Sprints. The indoor regatta was held on Saturday at Melville, Long Island’s St. Anthony High School. Varsity, novice, and middle school team members spent the day, at various points, warming up, mentally prepping, and pulling their way to medals.
The competing Row New Yorkers had tenacity and effort, with results to show for it. In the girls’ 8th grade and below 1K event, Alina Siminiouk led the team with a bronze medal finish and a time of 4:09.5. In the women’s high school freshmen event, Emma Parsons and Naomi Acosta led the team with top ten finishes at fourth and sixth place, respectively. In the women’s high school novice event, Joy Ene surged near the end to take a silver medal and a time of 8:08.6. Mary Gomez and Bianca Pickering came in at eighth and ninth, respectively, in the same event. In the women’s high school lightweight competition, Kassandra Nevarez grabbed a tenth place spot.

Our masters and veterans rowers brought home hardware as well. Beth Collins and Ara Hodge took home gold and silver, respectively, in the women’s open event, while Susan Ignaciuk won gold and Danika Durant won silver in the women’s senior event. Taking gold in the women’s veterans A event was Mary Dunne.

 

Director of Rowing Jennie Trayes summed up the day, saying, “Everyone represented us so well – from the masters event to the middle schoolers to the novices and the experienced high schoolers. The confidence and support and speed were all great. “
