On September 21st, Nickelodeon hosted its 10th Annual Worldwide Day of Play (WWDOP) in Prospect Park, in an effort to promote wellness and active lifestyles for youth of all ages. Row New York was there to partake in the action and many kids eagerly followed suit! At Row New York’s station, two rowing machines were set up for use by participants with cognitive and physical disabilities, and lines of kids quickly formed – and then never ended. Next door to Row New York was a half court with wheelchair basketball, and on the other side, three wheel bikes with hand pedals. Row New York created a definite appeal amidst the sports for youth with disabilities, showcasing new and uncharted territory. The wheels (and rowing machine fan wheel) never stopped turning throughout the day.

Row New York saw hundreds of kids, many of whom came back for more on several occasions. Exposing participants to rowing involved some quick-thinking methodology. Participants hopped on the rowing machine, got a quick run through of how to use their bodies in the exercise, and were set free to try out their new skill under close supervision. The day was filled with those simply wanting to try something new, kids looking to fit some physical activity into their day, and natural born competitors wanting to race their new found opponents.

All in all, WWDOP was a huge success for Row New York. Exposing younger generations to any sports opportunity is a step in the right direction, but getting them involved in a unique physical activity such as rowing that fully excites and engages them is even better. Row New York hopes that kids who came out to Prospect Park over the weekend will only learn more about the unique opportunity of rowing, and we welcome eager newcomers with open arms!

Row New York would like to thank Nickelodeon’s WWDOP for giving us the opportunity to introduce youth to the sport of rowing!
