On Saturday April 13, Row New York headed off to the 2nd Annual Row for Autism hosted by Friends of Port Rowing at North Hempstead Beach Park. Once again, a fully loaded trailer made up of Manhattan varsity, Queens novice, and half of the Queens varsity crew went to the races.

The Queens novices began the day off in the novice 4+, the first time in the season this line-up has raced. They had a strong and powerful row, finishing in 2nd place. Their teammates in the novice 8 followed them an hour later. Unfortunately, due to a last-minute illness the line-up was only able to row together a few times before the regatta. The crew had a valuable learning experience and it was the first race for many of the athletes.  Coach Breanne says that these young women “understand what they need to work on and are riled up to train for the next race,” and novice rower Nicole Grice commented, “I learned today that winning is not all that matters.”

The varsity raced our top 4+ and our third varsity 8, who rowed up in the second varsity 8 category. The 8 had a great row and battled back and forth for first place until the last 150 meters where unfortunately a boat stopping crab occurred. We are walking away from the experience with new knowledge on how to handle that situation as we continue to develop the depth of our program. In the varsity 4+, the crew was in a barnburner of a race, finishing seconds off of first place for a second place finish out of all 14 crews competing in that event.

For the boats on the Manhattan team, the girls’ varsity 4+ placed 4th in a field of 14 and the second varsity 4+ placed 2nd in a field of 12.  Coach Tom Eichler commented, “Coxswains performed well in challenging format, as it was racing six boats across, but with no lane markers or buoys, so boats tended to veer off in many different directions and there were quite a few collisions and near collisions. All of our coxswains got out in front of it and steered a great course.”

The crews have now transitioned back into finding the fastest line-ups as we move forward to The Cooper Cup on April 28th.  As always, thank you to the Row New York parents for all of their help and support!
