On Sunday our Manhattan and Queens teams raced at the Long Island Junior Rowing Championships, our first official regatta of the spring season! It was a rain-soaked, cold day, but our Row New York athletes stayed focused and performed well in the challenging conditions. The day was long, with our middle schoolers racing in one of the first events at 8:30am, and our Queens Varsity 4x wrapping up in one of the last events at 5:12pm. Despite the inclement weather, there was a lot of positive energy from the group, and everyone was excited to finally be racing. It was an added bonus to have Olympian rower, David Banks, on the sidelines cheering for Row New York.

Across the board Row New York’s total of seventeen(!) crews represented extremely well, competing at the event with over 40 other rowing clubs and a total of 508 entries. This was our first spring race, therefore the first opportunity for our athletes to test themselves against other crews. Regardless of results, everyone appreciated the chance to see how they fared against other teams. We will continue to keep our eyes toward our ultimate goal of placing at States and the Northeast Championship regattas later in the Spring.

Regatta Recap

MANHATTAN

Overall it was a great day for our Manhattan crews and a welcomed event after training hard over spring break and the winter season. Both our novice and varsity teams brought home medals! (Woot!).

Middle School:
Our middle school team had a great experience rowing by 8. Their biggest accomplishment as a team was to successfully complete a wet-launch– not an easy feat!

Novice:
Our novice Manhattan team had a great first rowing experience and both boats medaled!
Novice Boys 8+: 2nd in their flight.
Novice girls 4+: 2nd in their flight.

Varsity Girls:
The girl’s Manhattan team also had a successful day out on the water with all of the boats taking home medals.
JV 8+: 2nd place in their flight.
1V 4+: 2nd place in their flight.
JV 4+ (B): 2nd in their flight.
JV 4+ (A): 3rd in their flight.

Varsity Boys:
The varsity boy’s team pulled strong and earned a medal as well.
JV 8+: 2nd place in their flight.

QUEENS

Despite tough conditions, Queens boats had a productive experience, with the varsity girl’s 8 bringing home a gold medal! The race was also a great way to wrap up a busy spring break, and to gauge what else can be done in the two weeks before States.

Novice:
Novice 8+: 4th in their flight and 7 out of 19 overall! Although the day was cold, nothing could kill those first race nerves.

Varsity:
JV8+: first in their flight and second overall.
Girls 2- (pair): second overall

The Long Island Junior Rowing Championships was a stepping stone to see what our squads need to work on to keep getting faster and stronger on the water. All of the teams know that we can only get faster from here! A special thank you to all the parents and friends of Row New York who attended and supported us at the regatta and to Sagamore for hosting.
