This past weekend, our Queens and Manhattan middle school teams attended the River Rowing Ergathon in Nyack, NY. Officially the last race of the middle school winter season, the River Rowing Ergathon showed the strength and unity of our middle school teams as we gear up for spring!

RNY middle schoolers raced among 20 teams at the ergathon, including high school and adult teams, and were the youngest competitors in the field. Despite being the youngest, our teams scored 12th place overall. For Manhattan middle school coach, Denise Aquino, place was not the most important factor though: “I really liked seeing leaders emerge on our teams, making race strategies, and lifting the spirits of their team members. The ergathon really brought out the best in them.” Queens middle school coach Megan Nizza was equally impressed with the RNY squad: “Our students had great technique and form throughout the race and were so positive, motivating each other on and off the ergs!”

Row New Yorkers racked up nearly 25,000 meters throughout the two-hour race and athletes even got Coach Denise and Megan to row for the last minute of the race! The day was full of bonding and hard work, and the season ended just right with a well-deserved pizza lunch. We’re so proud of their teamwork and can’t wait to see the successful spring season to come!
