Row New York’s School Day Adaptive Program takes place each spring and fall, and provides 16 weeks of land-based and on-water rowing activities to middle school students with cognitive or physical disabilities. Schools provide transportation and a teacher to assist our coaches. Row New York provides all equipment, an experienced coaching staff, and a culminating event each season that gives our adaptive athletes the opportunity to compete against each other in lively races on Meadow Lake at our Queens boathouse.
Teachers report their students showing improvements not only in fitness but also in focus, balance, and positive engagement with their peers after participating in Row New York’s adaptive rowing program. One teacher had this to say:
“I was very impressed with the lesson and the procedures. All of my students felt safe and were very excited. I have one girl in particular who is non-verbal, but at the end of the session, in a complete sentence, she said, ‘I am going to tell my mother, grandmother, and father about rowing.’ Blew us away.”
Note: Athletes who take Access-a-Ride to the Queens boathouse should request “Parks—the Boathouse at Flushing Meadows.”
