This is a regatta recap blog. But first, we have something to say to all our middle and high schoolers: After a great summer season, we thank you for your hard work. We commend you for your early morning practices, for sweating it out in the heat, and your ability to always share a smile. We are so proud of you. To our seniors, some of whom have already started their next chapters, we wish you the best of luck as you head to college – you will always have a home at Row New York!

Now, for last weekend’s Philadelphia Youth Regatta results:

– In the Under 14 (middle school) 8+ event, our Manhattan line up beat Baltimore to win the event.
– In the J18 (Varsity) Boys 4x event, RNY Manhattan boy’s fought a tough race to miss fourth by two seconds and came in 5th.
– In the J18 (Varsity) Girls 4+ event, RNY Manhattan girls were 4th of 6 in their flight, finishing ahead of Burnt Hills RA and Port Rowing.
– In the J18 (Varsity) Boys 2x event, which had one of the most entries at the regatta, the boys crew was 5th in their flight, but managed to post the 23rd fastest overall time out of the 42 total crews entered in the event.

With the heat turning into severe thunderstorms, the remaining races at the regatta were cancelled and RNY’ers loaded up the trailer to head home in a good old fashioned Summer downpour.

All in all it was a good regatta, and for crews competing at Canadian Henley it served as a final tuneup before their last event of the summer. Stay posted for Henley updates and stories!

Middle school coach, Denise, shares how poised the middle school team was.

Middle school highlight:
The middle schoolers finished first in their heat. This was everyone’s first time racing in Philadelphia, but not everyone’s first time racing. We had a team meeting the night before to discuss race day expectations and many of them approached the race with the poise and confidence of an experienced rower. Notably, even though this was their first time unloading a boat from a trailer, their nerves didn’t show. May, Patricia, and I were very proud of their performance.

The boys varsity coach, Gabby, was happy with the races.

Boy’s varsity highlight
All in all, the boys came off the water happy with their performances. The 4x and the 8+ learned a lot about racing, being up against comparable boats for the first time this summer. The 2x finished in the top half of the 49 boats in their category in their first race of the summer.
