The Gold Coast Classic, an annual indoor regatta in Port Washington, NY, was the first race this season that all of our youth programs competed at together.  Everyone had a great day and made us proud, with many beating their personal bests. Here are some highlights from the race.

Results:

Manhattan Varsity:

  • -Varsity girls team captain Mackenzie O’Connor won her lightweight event with a time of 7:57.8, a full seven seconds ahead of the second place finisher. Diana Quezada, also competing in the Varsity Lightweight Girls event, finished 10th out of 14.
  • -Varsity Girls Tyler Bryant, Nadja Steiner, Brittany Benninger, Maddy Gonzalez, Dazohna Selby, and Dharma DelVillar all competed for RNY Manhattan. Tyler and Nadja had an excellent race in their heat. Both came from behind with strong finishes and broke the 8-minute barrier for the first time this year. They placed fourth and fifth respectively out of 34 competitors. Maddy and Brittany also achieved personal bests for the year.
  • -Varsity Boys Charles Mateo, Antonio Lopez, Ruben Martinez, and Christian Escano competed in the high school boys event with Charles, Antonio and Christian setting personal bests.


Queens Varsity:

  • -Chloe Rosario and Bianca Davila both earned first place in their respective heats while a number of our girls attained personal bests that day.


Manhattan Novice:

  • -It was the Manhattan Novice athletes’ first race and for most, their first time competing and doing a 2,000-meter event on an erg. Overall, 12 of our 15 athletes achieved a personal best time.

  • -In the Novice Lightweight Boys event, Oliver Chemtob finished first and Ricardo Pantaleon finished second. In the Novice Girls event, Isabel Billinge took home a third place finish.


Queens Novice:

  • -All Queens Novice athletes who competed at the gold coast classic beat their personal records yesterday! The theme of the Queens Novice 2Ks was “mindfulness” and “control,” and each athlete approached her 2K with a more complex strategy and awareness than ever before.

  • -Gaby Francis earned a gold in the Novice Women’s category. She beat her last 2K by over 6 seconds and broke the 8-minute barrier, with a time of 7:56.2. Zanaia Brown came in second in the same race, with a time of 8:07.9.

  • -In the Lightweight Novice Women’s category, Shannon Fegan earned a silver with a time of 8:19.2. She crushed her last 2K personal record by knocking off 17 seconds.

  • -Wendy Lam had the biggest PR, taking 22 seconds off her last 2K time. coming in at 8:41.7.


Manhattan Middle School:

  • -The boys did really well, taking second and third out of 17 competitors. Elias Almonte took second with a time of 3:50.9 and Emmanuel Ogando came in third at 3:54.6.

  • -The middle school girls also had a great showing, taking 6th, 10th, and 16th out of 50 competitors in their 1000-meter race. Rachelle Ritter took 6th with a time of 4:08.1, Azra Muratovic took 10th with a time of 4:14.4, and Alameda Chapman took 16th with a time of 4:22.8.


Queens Middle School:

  • -The Queens Middle School girls had a stellar day, with 20 out of 25 beating their personal records, most by 15 seconds or more.

  • -Alexsa Jack came in third with a time of 4:00.2 and brought home a bronze.
