In green and blooming Flushing Meadows Corona Park last Saturday, the Row New York girls and their families gathered to share food, fun, and sunshine, and to celebrate the success of the team. This year’s celebration marks the end of Row New York’s most decorated spring season ever, rounded out by a bronze medal earned by our varsity 4+ in the senior club event at the New York State Championship.

Highlights of the day included the conferring of the MVP & Captain’s Award to Shannon McCann, the Most Improved Award to Joy Ene (novice) and Jenee Small and Anny Sainvil (varsity), and the Student-Athlete Award to Arwa Farrag (novice) and Tenzin Khangkar (varsity). While sad to wrap up her last spring season with her teammates, Tenzin is already looking forward to the fall, when she will be attending the University of Wisconsin on a full scholarship.

In addition, the day marked an important right of passage for our fall 2011 novices who received their Row New York sweatshirts and officially became a part of the varsity team.

Meanwhile, our middle school rowers and their families also enjoyed an afternoon of awards and festivities. Crystal and Clynneice, pictured below, were crowned in recognition of their excellent attendance.

Rowers and their families also got out on the water. Varsity coxswain Danna Matute coaxed her entire family onto a barge and taught them to row!

A huge thank you to all the parents and families who helped set up and break down the event, brought food, and worked the grill.  For more photos from the day, check out Row New York’s Facebook page.
