As early decision letters start rolling in, we could not be more excited for our next generation of college-bound students. Yesterday we announced five seniors – Nile Hollie, Daniela Doyle, Rachel Zemser, Ricardo Panteleon, and Sophia Carter – who already have been accepted into some of their top choice schools. Congratulations!

So what’s going through our seniors’ minds right now? How did they choose where to apply and what will they remember of Row New York once they move into their college years?

We caught up with Sophia Carter of the Manhattan girls team to get some answers. She was recently admitted to Brown University where she was recruited for the rowing team. Sophia is currently a senior at Ethical Culture Fieldston School and joined Row New York her sophomore year. She sits stroke seat. 🙂

Sophia,

What sort of criteria did you consider when applying to schools?

As someone who has a wide range of interests (from art to science to literature), I wanted to attend a school that would allow me to pursue them all. Brown’s open curriculum will allow me to do just that. It was very important that the school I attended had a top rowing team. Also, I was looking for a school that could provide me with a similar sense of community that I have found at Row New York.

Do you want to row in college? If so, why?

After discovering rowing in an unlikely way (I showed up to tryouts as a sophomore, not even knowing what rowing was), it has had a huge influence on my aspirations and work ethic. I know this is a sport I want to continue and cannot wait to join a team of such caliber as Brown’s.

What’s been the most exciting moment so far in your college search?

It was definitely when I received a phone call from the coach at Brown informing me that he had decided to recruit me.

Do you have a dream school?

Brown became my dream school after I went on my official visit. When I attended classes, I saw how creative and passionate the students all are. When I attended practice with their rowing team, it was obvious that each girl attacked every stroke as if it was their last. They approach everything they do with a competitive drive but also have fun in the process and I knew that was exactly what I was looking for in a team.

What do you think you’ll remember fondly when you look back at your Row New York experience?

My teammates and coaches — the laughs we have shared, the constant encouragement and advice I have received — have been the most important part of my experience at Row New York. They have had a fundamental impact on who I am and will always be a part of me.

Congratulations, Sophia! We are so proud of all your hard work and dedication to pursuing your dream school.
