In our best showing ever at the New York State Championship, Row New York brought home two gold medals – club gold for our Queens girls’ novice 4+ and club gold for our Manhattan girls’ varsity 8+. Both boats shrugged off inclement weather and rough conditions to steam past the competition.

The Queens novice boat had especially dramatic races, facing impeding boats in both their time trial and the final. In the time trial, when their lane was blocked by another boat, coxswain Katherine Hernandez expertly steered around them to complete the race in the yield lane with a second place finish. In the final, a very tight race among the top three boats, our girls faced an impeding boat in the last 50 meters, which brought them to a stop for safety reasons. As soon as the course was cleared, they charged up again, and ended the race in second place overall – first place among club boats.

Queens Novice Coach Breanne Fitzsimmons says, “I am extremely proud of the focus, respect, and commitment this novice squad has shown me, their teammates, and the other teams this season.”

Of the States experience of the Manhattan team, Varsity Coach Tom Eichler says, “My athletes are really proud to represent Row New York, and I am too! It’s nice to be able to put a bow on this season with medals and a trophy.”

Congratulations to all of our athletes on a great spring season!
