STUDENT ATHLETES

Some people perceive high school and college sports participation to be a distraction from academics, but for Row New Yorkers, this could not be further from the truth. Intensive training in a physically demanding, technically challenging sport helps our program participants tap into an inner and outer strength they never knew they had and to shift their focus from what their bodies look like to what they can DO, an experience that increases their determination and level of performance in all facets of their lives, including at school.

Our rowers have earned full or partial rowing scholarships to some of the most respected college programs. Row New York graduates have gone on to row with college crews at Michigan State, Radcliffe, Northeastern, Rutgers, Stetson, Binghamton, and Smith, among others.

ROWER SPOTLIGHT

  • CHARLOTTE RENDON
Charlotte was part of the varsity four that finished second in the state in 2008. She is a first-generation American citizen — her parents are from Colombia.
  • What were the early moments in rowing like?
Exciting. There was all this new stuff. But it was hard. On the erg, I was dying. But it was fun because everyone was doing it.
  • What is the most important lesson rowing has taught you?
When I started rowing, everything else improved. Music. School. I was more determined to do what I needed to do in life.
  • Any fun stories?
Van rides to races are fun. Thirty minutes of craziness and then everyone is dead asleep.
