Row New York’s summer rowing camp is the perfect opportunity for those who want to spend the summer outdoors learning a new sport, getting fit, having fun, and making friends.

Our summer camp is great for youth without rowing experience and is designed as an introduction to the sport. Individuals with rowing experience are welcome to join as they’ll benefit from additional practice on the water and build skills to improve technique.

Campers will learn the basics of the sculling rowing stroke–which uses two oars, one in each hand–on and off the water. First, they’ll learn how to row on ergometers (rowing machines) on land, and get exposure to equipment basics and on-water safety. Then we’ll make a quick transition to the water where coaches will use simple drill sequences and short training pieces to build technique. By the end of the session, rowers will gain the confidence and skills to participate in a scrimmage, or informal race, with fellow campers.

Each session will include basic land training and stretching. No athletic experience is necessary, but a willingness to take on new physical challenges and an interest in learning new things is helpful.

Participants with an annual household income below $100,000 row for free.

Transportation is available to and from camp. Participants are picked up near the Mets-Willets Point Station on the 7 subway line.

FAQs

When does summer camp take place?

Camp runs Monday to Friday, from 9:00-11:00am for Middle School students (rising 8th and 9th graders), and 10:30am-12:30pm for High School students (rising 10th, 11th, and 12th graders). Camp sessions are as follows:

Camp 1:  July 8-12 & July 15-19
Camp 2:  July 22-26 & July 29-August 2
How much does camp cost?

Sessions are $800 each. There is a $50 registration fee for all participants.

Participants with an annual household income below $100,000 are eligible to row for free. Rowers who attend for free will receive a $50 reimbursement for the registration fee after they start camp.

Why should I row?

Rowing is fun, challenging and the ultimate group effort in athletics. Campers will learn new movements and techniques, then work to do them in perfect sync with their teammates. As a result, they’ll row with peers who they can work hard and have fun with. 

Rowing is a full body sport that uses the legs, arms, and core to complete each stroke. Participants are challenged to focus their effort on performing this motion more gracefully and powerfully each day. In addition to the many physical and mental benefits of rowing, it allows you to spend time outdoors on the water, and provides a great diversion from city life. Did we mention you’ll have fun and meet new people? There are many great reasons to row with us!

Is the COVID-19 vaccine required to participate?

COVID-19 vaccinations are not required to participate. Participants who were exposed to, are experiencing symptoms, or have tested positive for COVID-19 should stay at home to prevent the spread of the virus. Row New York follows State and City guidelines concerning quarantine and returns-to-practice in the event of COVID-19 exposure or infection.

What should I bring to summer camp?
Please wear non-baggy athletic clothing and sneakers. All rowers should bring extra socks, flip flops (optional), sunscreen, a brimmed hat and/or sunglasses, a layer for the rain or chilly weather, a water bottle, and a snack. Lunch is not provided. Be sure to have breakfast and stay hydrated. You may get wet on the water, so bring a dry change of clothing.

Will camp be canceled if it rains?

We will row when it rains, but we will not row in strong winds, lightning or thunder.  If we cannot row, we will still practice on land.

Is rowing safe?

Yes! Safety is a top priority at Row New York. We want all of our participants to feel safe and comfortable in and out of the water, and strive to provide an environment that allows everyone to perform at their best. We achieve this by following extensive land and water safety procedures, and employing highly trained rowing coaches. Additionally, all coaches and staff must have completed CPR and First Aid training.

I can't swim, can I row?

Yes! Beginner swimmers and rowers who are unable to swim will wear a lap-belt Personal Flotation Device while they are on the water. It is very rare for rowers to end up in the water. If a rower ends up in the water their coaches are right there, and have life jackets and safety equipment to hand out immediately. A coaching launch–an engine-operated boat from which the coach trains rowers–will accompany every rowing shell (boat). If you have concerns or the participant is uncomfortable in the water, please reach out to the camp coach and we will make a plan specific to their needs.

Can I sign up for multiple camps?

Yes, participants may sign up for multiple camps. The program will be the same for each camp, but campers attending multiple camps will benefit from taking on a leadership role since they will have more experience. Plus, there is always more to learn!
