Yesterday, BuzzFeed brought some of their staff to the Peter Jay Sharp Boathouse for an afternoon of team building and an evening of fun!  The group started the event by doing some team building games and lessons.  They focused on the same three areas that Row New York asks students to focus on:  engage, motivate, and enhance. The group discussed tactics to improve communication, motivation, efficiency and productivity by sharing resources, prioritizing, spending time reflecting, and getting to know one another better.

After their initial discussion, the group began their indoor training on the rowing machines.  On the erg, the Buzzfeed rowers got their first taste of rowing technique and vocabulary and the importance of focus and teamwork – the Row New York coaches were impressed by how quickly they caught on!

buzzfeed 5While erging is fun in its own right, the real teambuilding began when our novices from Buzzfeed got in the boat.  Each team worked with their coach to learn how to safety carry the boat, get in the boat, and row.  One athlete mentioned that she had never been on Nickelodeon’s “Guts,” an action sports competition series before, but that her experience rowing was a lot like that. Buzzfeed proved they had guts, patience, teamwork, and athletic ability as they worked together on the Harlem River and raced by the end of the day!  Though a winner was not determined because the competition was so tight, a good, fun time was had by all!

The hard practice ended with a BBQ dinner catered by Dinosaur BBQ and happy hour where an intense and creative game of Pictionary ensued.  Thank you, Buzzfeed, for coming out to learn to row and work together!
