On Sunday morning, 130 of our young rowers headed east to compete at the Long Island Junior Rowing Championships, the second-to-last race in the spring racing season, only to discover that the regatta would soon be cancelled due to extreme wind. Everyone was ready and excited for the final race before state championships next weekend, but they learned that even when the weather doesn’t cooperate, your teammates do.

Despite challenging conditions, both our Queens and Manhattan middle schoolers were able to launch early in the day, though due to high wind they were instructed to row back to the return beach. We are very proud of them for remaining composed in the face of very bad water — and apparently so were the regatta organizers: although they didn’t get to race, our kids received medals for their bravery! As singles were being carried back to the dock in coaching launches, our middle schoolers were still on the water.

A huge thanks to all the families who brought lots of food, and helped make the best of a cancelled race with a great picnic on the beach. We also hear there was dancing on the sand . . .
