This past summer, graduating Row New York seniors’ Brittany and Nadja, ventured out with a camera to capture the essence of being on the Manhattan varsity team. Through interviews and footage of everyday life at the the Peter Jay Sharp Boathouse in Upper Manhattan, their teammates shared honest insights on their growth, coaches, college, and the sport of rowing. The athlete spotlight series was an impressive undertaking by Nadja, who went on to row for Bates College, and Brittany, who now attends University of Notre Dame.

Join us over the next six weeks as we dive into what our student athletes had on their minds this summer, and see where they are now.

To kick off the series, we introduce our varsity rower, Gustavo!

Fast Forward:

DSC_0420Since the filming of this interview, Gustavo accomplished his goal of making it to the Varsity Eight. Described by his coach, Sasha, he “excelled during the fall season”. Besides maintaining honor roll, he does the morning announcements at his high school, and is the Vice President of the Student Government Team! Gustavo is currently focusing on becoming a certified lifeguard while wrapping up his college applications. We hope rowing continues to inspire him to have a positive impact on his community and his work going forward!

Next Week on Athlete Spotlights:

The creators of the Student Spotlights series, Brittany and Nadja, reflect on how Row New York, and their team, grew throughout the years.

The Athlete Spotlights series was filmed in the summer of 2015. Created and produced by Row New York alumane 15′, Brittany Benninger and Nadja Steiner, they highlight the student-athlete rowing experience.
