Row New York’s Coach Mike Eichler provides the following recap of our crews’ efforts at this year’s Head of the Charles Regatta.
****************
Row New York headed up to the Charles River in Boston, MA this past weekend with the largest contingent in program history. The Head of the Charles Regatta (HOCR) drew approximately 300,000 spectators and thousands of competitors, including our own women’s youth 8+, a men’s youth 4+, and a women’s club 4+.
Saturday saw calm winds and warm temperatures reaching into the low 70s for a strong row by our club 4+ comprised of coxswain Danna Matute (RNY 12′), Kate Mullan (stroke), Jennie Trayes (3), Amanda Kraus (2), and Brittany Aiello (bow). Our staff crew placed 17th out of 48 with a time of 20:07.2, guaranteeing that the Charles will see another club 4+ from Row New York next year!

Sunday brought cooler temperatures and slight head and cross winds that grew throughout the day, but our youth crews were up to the challenge. The men’s youth 4+ entry, a very young crew consisting of coxswain Suzy Zubkoff, and stroke-bow, Bar Oron, Francisco Quiogue, Xander Fong, and Yondon Fu, placed 79th out of 85 and beat a few of our local competitors.
The women’s youth 8+ entry was the first time Row New York tried its hand in the 8+ category, taking the top rowers from our Queens and Manhattan boathouses and combining them in one crew. The girls competed against a fully subscribed field with 85 entries and finished 36th, guaranteeing an entry into next year’s HOCR. The crew of coxswain Claudia Di Maio, Shannon McCann (stroke), Alexa Presto, Kimberly Bush, Jenee Small, Mackenzie O’Connor, Alex Cirone, Anny Sainvil, and Ally Cippola (bow) pushed down the course in a time of 19:39.15, besting more than half the field and many of our local competitors that we will see throughout the year.

Thank you to Kiera Keegan (’12) and Emily Quaranta (’11) for rooting on Row New York, and thanks to all of the teammates, alums, and former coaches who sent good luck texts and made well-wishing phone calls.

Next up: the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta this coming weekend, with races on Sunday.
See you there!
Go fast.
