This past weekend, RNY kicked off our spring recreational adaptive season with new volunteers from NY Cares. Coming off of a great winter season, our athletes, coaches, and new volunteers are ready to forge ahead into the spring season!

With much ground covered during volunteer orientation, our NY Cares volunteers were eager to work with adaptive rowers despite less than ideal weather conditions. But high winds did not deter recreational adaptive team members from showing up at the boathouse or dampen their spirits while rowing. “Our first day of the spring season was a success! Although choppy water kept our rowers inside, they were happy to start the new season,” said Adaptive and Para-rowing Coach Carol Quijada. Many rowers have returned from their successful winter season, and there are even some new faces who are eager to learn the ropes!

For Coach Carol, implementing one-on-one practices with as many rowers as possible is her big spring goal. Last fall, one adaptive rower had the opportunity to row in an Alden shell: a rowing shell designed to teach rowers how to scull on a single (or, row with two oars in a boat designed for one person). His experience was extremely positive and one he wishes to repeat. As such, Coach Carol hopes to eventually transition to shells for her some of her rowers.

“A highlight was definitely the enthusiasm from NY Cares volunteers and each rower getting the attention required to train. Every volunteer and team leader represented themselves and NY Cares in a respectful and charismatic manner. I was very happy and our rowers will receive so much help from having them there,” said Coach Carol.

Thanks to our coaches and our NYCares volunteers; we can’t wait to see what progress is in store!
