ACADEMIC PROGRAMMING

Tutoring

Row New York provides one-on-one and small group tutoring in our Long Island City office, Mondays after school and other days as needed. Our full-time Academic Director and part-time math, science, and writing tutors get to know our students, and focus on their individual needs. Students with a GPA below 80%, or who are struggling in any one class, are required to attend every week, although all students are welcome. To make our tutoring sessions as focused and efficient as possible, we conduct our own assessment of basic academic skills to determine subject areas of greatest need for each student. Our Academic Director tracks progress and makes sure that each student gets up to speed in every subjects.

SAT Prep

Our student athletes receive the kind of SAT prep that is not often available to public school students. They receive their own SAT review book and attend individual and group sessions with an experienced SAT tutor. They spend time reviewing the test and sharpening math and vocabulary skills, and even get pointers on how to deal with test anxiety. In the summer, we have an intensive four-week SAT prep program comparable to those offered by big-name test prep companies. Sessions are held at our Long Island City office, easy to reach by public transportation.

College Prep

The average ratio of students to college guidance counselors in America’s urban high schools is 740:1. This makes the complicated college application process difficult—sometimes impossible—to navigate, especially for young people who are striving to be the first in their families to attend college. Row New York fills this void, providing careful consideration of each student’s wants and needs in order to prepare them for, and place them in, the best possible colleges and universities. Row New Yorkers meet regularly with the Academic Director to create a college list and plan campus visits. Assistance with applications, the college essay, and financial aid forms is also provided. As a part of our Guest Speaker Series, Kara Courtois of College Coach frequently visits to demystify the college process and provide insight and advice to students and their parents.
