Row New York (RNY) seeks a positive and energetic Varsity Program Director (VPD). The VPD will coach, manage, and motivate a team of up to 40 high school girls enrolled in Row New York’s Empowerment through Rowing and Academics (ERA) program in their pursuit of athletic and academic excellence.

The VPD will work between Row New York’s main office in Long Island City and the boathouse in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. An excellent candidate has considerable experience coaching rowing and is committed to sports based youth development.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage the day to day operation of the Varsity Program
  • Coach Varsity participants in a safe, inclusive, and elite environment
  • Manage Varsity academic programming with the support of the Academic Director
  • Track participant academic and athletic information
  • Model positive character and leadership
  • With support from Varsity Program Assistant, coordinate all race logistics, including: registration, securing directions to regatta sites, communicating details to parents, trailer driving, trailer liaison/etc., information sharing with participants
  • Work with social workers and other support professionals to provide support for Varsity participants
  • Partner with the College Prep Advisor to support seniors in the recruitment and application processes
  • Foster strong relationships with all Varsity participants
  • Forge strong relationships with families and community members
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with RNY staff and administration, including administrators, coaches, and support staff
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with postsecondary staff, including admissions representatives, pre-collegiate partners, and other related outreach partners
  • Provide program information and outcomes to the Director of Development on a regular basis
  • Coordinate transportation of athletes to practice
  • Assist the Operations Manager with minor equipment repairs and rigging, as necessary
  • Work with other Program Directors and management staff to plan and host events for participants and families throughout the year

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 2 + years coaching experience, with demonstrated safety record
  • Minimum 3 years of collegiate or elite level rowing
  • Commitment to the mission of Row New York
  • Strong references
  • Commitment to the spirit of a sports based youth development model
  • Experience working with youth (especially those who are traditionally underserved) and a passion for helping youth succeed
  • Strong work ethic coupled with an enthusiastic and passionate approach to work
  • A sense of humor, tolerance for change, and a demonstrated ability to create a positive culture and sense of empowerment for students/families
  • Strong oral communication and writing skills, ability to communicate with sensitivity and to work with diverse populations, comfortable with public speaking
  • Strong organization skills, attention to detail, ability to complete tasks accurately and in a timely manner
  • Proactive problem solver who demonstrates initiative and ability to work individually and on a team
  • Ability to operate in a professional manner including proper attire, ethical behavior, and strict confidentiality with student/family information
  • Clean driver’s license and ability to drive a boat trailer
  • Effective use of a variety of technology tools including database a plus

Highly Desired:

  • Spanish fluency (oral and written)

Compensation:
This is a full time position in its first year, and salary will be commensurate with experience. It includes health and dental insurance, paid vacation, professional development and a 403b plan option.

Row New York is looking for two highly responsible, adaptable, and energetic individuals to coach our high school participants within the context of our daily rowing program.

Responsibilities:
1) Coach participants: assist Head Coach in training high school and middle school girls to row indoors on rowing machines and on the water
2) Assist with transportation to and from practice
3) Travel to regattas when you are available
4) Serve as a positive role model for all participants

Qualifications:
1) Knowledge of rowing (at least two years of competitive experience)
2) BA or BS preferred
3) Strong communication skills (both written and verbal)
4) Clean driver’s license and comfortable driving a 15-passenger van preferred
5) Experience working with young people from diverse backgrounds a plus

Schedule: Opportunity to coach for minimum one day each week, maximum five days each week, Mon-Fri 4-7pm, Sat 9am-12pm. Please let us know if you are interested in any or all of the days.
