Congratulations to the NYC Fire Department boat! They edged out the NYC Police Department in Row New York’s inaugural Heroes Row the Harlem 1,000-meter race today. But of course, all our rowers are huge winners for taking on this friendly competition and celebrating National Learn to Row Day with us. Great champions all. In just seven weeks, they learned to row on our indoor machines, graduated to barges, then got out on the Harlem River and raced in shells in front of family, supporters, friends, and special guests Gale Brewer, Manhattan Borough President, and City Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez.
After the race, we celebrated. The Peter Jay Sharp Boathouse was open to all for tours, learn-to-row sessions, cookouts, face painting, and kids’ activities. It was a memorable and festive spring day, and we hope the first of many such races featuring our heroes.
NYPD, FDNY, and coaches: congratulations to all, and hope to see you on the water again very soon.
